ArcelorMittal, Local Gov’t Forms Partnership to Create Vacation Jobs for Youths in Grand Bassa

In a major step toward youth empowerment and community engagement, ArcelorMittal Liberia (AML) has announced plans to provide vacation job opportunities for students in its operational areas, including Grand Bassa, Nimba, and Bong Counties. The initiative, launched in partnership with the Grand Bassa County Administration, aims to support educational development during the ongoing school break by engaging students in meaningful short-term employment. During a well-attended meeting with local authorities, AML’s Community Relations Officer and staff informed Grand Bassa Superintendent Hon. Karyou Johnson of the company’s readiness to roll out the program. The vacation job initiative will specifically target senior high school and university students residing in AML’s affected communities, providing them with valuable work experience and a modest income during the two-month break. The program is expected to begin in August and run through September 2025, with coordination support from the Ministry of Youth and Sports and the Ministry of Education. Key stakeholders present at the meeting included the Grand Bassa County Civil Society Council, the Bassa Youth Caucus leadership, the President of the Grand Bassa Student Union (GBASU), County Education Officer Jefferson Vobah, Township Commissioner Isaac N. Williams of Harlandsville, and community representatives. Together, these groups agreed to form a vetting committee to coordinate the implementation and selection process. While the initial plan projected 200 student beneficiaries across the three counties, Superintendent Karyou Johnson’s appeal for expanded inclusion was welcomed by AML representatives, who indicated the company’s willingness to increase the number of participants to accommodate more students. “This partnership is a strong reflection of our commitment to youth empowerment and education,” said a representative of ArcelorMittal. “We believe in investing in the future of the communities where we operate, and this program is a testament to that belief.” In response, student leaders, civil society representatives, and youth institutions commended the initiative and pledged their support to ensure its successful implementation. Details regarding the application process, eligibility, and financial benefits will be published this week on AML’s official website, social media platforms, and broadcast via community radio stations in affected regions. This partnership between ArcelorMittal and local government represents a promising opportunity for Liberia’s youth and a model for responsible corporate-community collaboration.
