Gov’t Announces Groundbreaking for Overhead Bridge Project Set for September 2025

The Government of the Republic of Liberia has officially announced that the groundbreaking ceremony for the long-anticipated Overhead Bridge Project will take place in September 2025. This landmark initiative marks a major milestone in the government’s commitment to modernizing the country's transportation infrastructure and enhancing road safety. According to a statement issued by the Ministry of Public Works, the groundbreaking ceremony will signal the formal launch of construction activities on multiple overhead bridges across key urban centers in Monrovia and its environs. The project is expected to alleviate chronic traffic congestion and reduce pedestrian-related accidents in some of the city's most heavily trafficked corridors. “This project demonstrates the Boakai-led administration’s resolve to transform Liberia’s infrastructure and improve the daily lives of our citizens,” said Hon. Roland Giddings, Minister of Public Works. “The construction of overhead bridges will not only ease traffic bottlenecks but will also provide safe crossings for thousands of pedestrians and schoolchildren who navigate busy intersections every day.” Following the September ceremony, full-scale construction work will begin immediately, with initial focus on major intersections including the ELWA Junction, Red Light, and the Broad Street corridor. The government has already completed feasibility studies, environmental assessments, and initial design work to ensure a smooth and timely rollout of the project. The project, which is being financed through a combination of public funding and international development partnerships, is part of the national infrastructure development strategy aimed at fostering economic growth, improving mobility, and reducing travel times for commuters and businesses alike. “We are taking bold steps to reimagine and rebuild our cities in ways that are more efficient and safer for everyone,” added Minister Giddings. “We call on the public to support the project and remain patient during the construction phase, as the long-term benefits far outweigh the temporary inconvenience.” The Government of Liberia assures the public that all necessary measures will be taken to minimize disruption during construction and to adhere to international engineering and safety standards. As Liberia prepares for this historic groundbreaking event, citizens are encouraged to embrace this transformative development, which promises to usher in a new era of urban mobility and infrastructure modernization.
