LiMA Intervenes to Restore Ferry Services in Edina City

Friday, June 20, 2025

In a major boost to community transportation and tourism in Grand Bassa County, the Liberia Maritime Authority (LiMA) has supported the restoration of the Edina City ferry, which has been out of service due to mechanical failure. The ferry, originally donated by the Joseph Nyuma Boakai Foundation, has been the primary means of crossing the St. John River, a critical route connecting the historic city of Edina to Buchanan and onward to the capital. In its absence, residents have been forced to rely on unsafe, manually operated boats, putting lives at risk and hampering economic and social activities.

Recognizing the urgent need, LiMA Commissioner and Chief Executive Officer, Cllr. Neto Zarzar Lighe, Sr., made an intervention on behalf of the Liberia Maritime Authority following an official assessment visit to Edina. The Commissioner had traveled to the area as part of a broader initiative to explore the establishment of a ship graveyard. During the visit, he was briefed on the ferry’s breakdown and the resulting hardships faced by residents and tourists alike. As a response, and in line with LiMA’s corporate social responsibility program, Commissioner Lighe presented a cash donation of US$2,500.00 to the City of Edina through its Mayor, Madam Lady M. Benson. The presentation took place on Tuesday, June 17, 2025, at LiMA’s Global Headquarters in Monrovia. Commissioner Lighe expressed hope that the contribution would serve as a catalyst for restoring ferry operations and revitalizing the local economy.

“This effort is part of our commitment to not only regulating Liberia’s maritime space but also supporting communities that depend on water transportation for their livelihood and connection to essential services,” said Commissioner Lighe. “We believe this contribution will help restore safe and reliable transport across the St. John River.” In her remarks, Mayor Benson extended heartfelt thanks to LiMA’s leadership for the timely support. “This donation will be pivotal in getting our ferry back in service,” she said. “It opens the door for safer movement and reignites the potential for tourism and economic activities in our historic city.” The Liberia Maritime Authority remains dedicated to contributing to national development through strategic partnerships and community-focused initiatives.
