The Movement for Democracy and Reconstruction (MDR) has officially endorsed Hon. Kortor Kwagrue as its candidate in the upcoming by-election for Nimba County District #5, scheduled for August 12, 2025. The decision was announced following a high-level party meeting held at the MDR national headquarters in Congo Town earlier this week. The endorsement of Kwagrue came after what party officials described as an “exhaustive consultative process” involving local leaders, traditional authorities, and key stakeholders within the district. Hon. Kwagrue was selected over fellow contender Hon. Augustus Menkoah, in what insiders say was a close and carefully deliberated decision. According to the MDR Executive Committee, Kwagrue’s unwavering loyalty to the party and consistent engagement with the people of District #5 played a major role in his endorsement. "Hon. Kwagrue has demonstrated unmatched dedication to the MDR and the people of Nimba," said Party Chairperson Cllr. Cooper W. Kruah, Sr. “He has contested twice, finishing second to Senator Samuel Kogar in both 2017 and 2023. His persistence, service record, and grassroots connections make him the right choice at this critical time.” Cllr. Kruah also extended gratitude to the party's executive members and praised the leadership of Senator Samuel Kogar for his instrumental role in reaching consensus. Notably, Senator Kogar, who had previously shown support for Hon. Menkoah, joined other party leaders in endorsing Kwagrue and emphasized the need for unity within the MDR. “Let us rally around our candidate and speak with one voice,” said Senator Kogar. “This by-election is not just about one seat; it is about the future direction of our party and our representation in the House.” Although Hon. Menkoah expressed reservations about the outcome, calling for further consultations with his base, party officials are optimistic that the MDR will remain united heading into the by-election. Hon. Kortor Kwagrue, who is widely known as a close ally and reported engineer of Vice President Jeremiah Kpan Koung, has pledged to run a campaign focused on development, transparency, and community empowerment. The August 12 by-election comes amid growing political interest in Nimba County, and MDR leaders believe Kwagrue's candidacy presents the best chance for reclaiming the District #5 seat.
