The Nimba County Health Team (CHT) has officially commenced the construction of a modern, multipurpose Expanded Program on Immunization (EPI) Headquarters in the heart of Sanniquellie. This landmark project is expected to significantly enhance vaccine storage, training, and health service coordination in the county. Once completed, the new EPI Headquarters will serve as a central hub for immunization activities across the county. The facility will include a temperature-controlled storage unit for vaccines and other sensitive medical commodities, ensuring compliance with international cold chain standards to maintain vaccine efficacy.
Additionally, the facility will house a fully equipped conference room to host training sessions, health coordination meetings, and technical briefings. It will also feature office spaces designed to accommodate key health staff, allowing for improved planning, monitoring, and delivery of essential public health services. According to the Nimba County Health Officer, Dr. Fredrick K. Doemenyahn, the project represents a significant step toward improving public health systems and immunization programs in the county. “This facility will allow us to better manage our vaccines and health supplies, and more effectively coordinate immunization outreach activities. It is a major investment in the health and future of our people,” he said.
The EPI program plays a critical role in safeguarding children and adults against preventable diseases such as measles, polio, tuberculosis, and hepatitis. By establishing a centralized location with appropriate infrastructure, the Nimba CHT aims to improve vaccine coverage, ensure uninterrupted supply chains, and respond more effectively to public health needs. Community leaders and residents have welcomed the initiative, viewing it as a timely and necessary intervention. Local health workers also expressed optimism that the new headquarters will enhance their capacity to deliver life-saving vaccines and increase community confidence in the health system.
This project is being undertaken with support from the Ministry of Health and development partners committed to strengthening Liberia’s healthcare delivery system. It aligns with national efforts to expand immunization services and reduce child and maternal mortality across the country. Construction of the EPI Headquarters is expected to be completed by early 2026, with phased equipment installation and staffing to follow shortly after.
