President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Sr., Tuesday, June 24, 2025 led members of his Cabinet in signing the Book of Condolence in honor of the late former President Samuel Kanyon Doe. The solemn ceremony took place at the historic Centennial Memorial Pavilion on Ashmun Street in Monrovia. The event marks the beginning of a series of official activities dedicated to honoring the life and legacy of former President Doe and his wife, the late First Lady Nancy B. Doe. Both are being remembered for their roles in Liberia’s complex history and national journey.
During the ceremony, President Boakai paid tribute to the former leader, noting the importance of remembering all past leaders as a sign of national maturity and reconciliation. He emphasized that Liberia’s history no matter how turbulent must be preserved with dignity, and its leaders, living or deceased, accorded respect. “Today, we come not only to mourn but to reflect,” President Boakai stated. “President Doe was a pivotal figure in Liberia’s political evolution, and his contributions, as well as his challenges, form part of our national narrative. We honor him with humility and with a hope for continued healing and unity.”
Also in attendance were senior government officials, members of the Doe family, and representatives of the Armed Forces of Liberia, which President Doe once led. The Centennial Pavilion was adorned with national colors, and a portrait of the former president stood at the center of the gathering. The commemoration continues throughout the week, culminating in a night of wake-keeping to be held on Thursday, June 26, 2025. Final funeral rites and interment are scheduled for Friday, June 27, in Zwedru, Grand Gedeh County, the hometown of the late president. The Government of Liberia has declared Friday, June 27, as a National Day of Reflection in honor of the late President Doe and First Lady Nancy B. Doe.
